At Teens Sphere Initiative, we do not believe that there are categories of young people who cannot be educated. We understand the uniqueness of every child in the way that they learn and combine different strategies in our pedagogy to suit the peculiarities of each group of learner.
From classroom experience, the names ‘dullard’ and ‘repeater’ are attributed to students experiencing learning difficulties, and the psychological implications of repeating a class on a learner’s self-esteem can be devastating. It is common practice for students in this category to give up on education and quit school, especially those in low-income communities.
As educational equity advocates, it is our passion and dream that every child attains quality education, which include access to a rich curriculum and the right pedagogy, regardless of their socioeconomic backgrounds.
Seeing students give up on the sciences and seek to escape to other departments because they struggle in key areas like math, physics and chemistry due to poor educational background can be so worrisome.
As part of our educational intervention program, we enrolled learners in this category in our After-School Classes and started giving them the right motivation to learn.
We discovered subject ambiguity and lack of comprehensible instructional aids to be a problem. To this, we reinvented instructional resources and revamped lesson contents in a manner that aided subject simplification and retention.
After several months of laying the foundations of sciences and trying to bring them up to speed about latest trends in science competitions, we enrolled some our learners to represent their school in the Tolaram Science Challenge. Indeed, it was a dream come true.
At the end of the one-week rigorous Tolaram Science Challenge, our learners came 1st and 2nd runner-up out of 16 schools from both private and government schools for two consecutive years. Some of these learners were also awarded UTME scholarships with cash prices.
We are so encouraged to continue to help these young people achieve their individual goals and become responsible, independent and successful in the future.
